Kelongs - traditional wooden fishing structures ubiquitous to Southeast Asia – once dotted Singapore’s waters. In the 1940s, 254 licensed kelongs produced 60% of Singapore’s seafood. Today, only a handful remain.
Kelongs like E63 represent an important part of Singapore's maritime heritage and connection with the sea, embodying more than 150 years of fishing heritage that has witnessed Singapore's transformation over the decades. From Bugis-Malay pawang rituals that blessed their construction to Mazu worship that safeguarded their operations, kelongs were more than fishing platforms - sites where cultural traditions merged and adapted to life at sea.
Take a peek into our digital documentation of Kelong E63 through a transmedia approach that combines oral history, photography, video, 3D, and immersive technologies. In collaboration with 3D specialists, surveyors, and even divers, we give an insight into the process on how we capture what’s above and underwater, as well as the life that still goes on in the kelong, and present the captured data in a holistic digital experience.
