STORYLINE:
Scuffles broke out on Wednesday in the Spanish city of Barcelona during a May Day rally which saw hundreds of people angered by austerity measures and economic recession take to the streets in large organised protest marches.
The rally started peacefully with an estimated crowd of about five-thousand marching through the streets of downtown Barcelona in the late afternoon.
But some protesters rioted, damaging several shops and banks.
Protesters were dispersed following a large anti-riot operation by regional police.
Local media reported that two protesters were detained by the police late on Wednesday.
