Over 400,000 innocent Americans are currently held in jail. Why? Because of a policy called cash bail.
If you didn't already know, cash bail is a specific amount of money a defendant has to pay in order to be released from jail after their initial arrest, but before their trial, if they show up for court, the money is then given back.
And this is uniquely an American system. The United States is the only other country in the world apart from the Philippines to enforce cash bail.
The debate over cash bail is heating up, so I thought it would be useful to look back into how the cash bail system started in the first place, being altered throughout generations, and leading us to where we are today.
