Brownells Gun Tech™ Keith Ford is joined by Paul Levy at Rock Island Auction Company to show us a pair of 9mm submachineguns. The Smith & Wesson Model 76 was designed in 1966 for the U.S. Navy as a replacement for the Carl Gustaf m/45 or Kulsprutepistol m/45, more commonly known as the Swedish K. The K was popular with SEAL teams operating in Vietnam, but the Swedish government decided to enforce its neutrality in that conflict and ban export of the Swedish K to the U.S. The Navy's specifications were simple: they needed a cheap, rugged, reliable, easy-to-repair, select-fire submachinegun FAST. Nine months later, S&W delivered the first production M76. How does the M76 stack up to the Swedish K? We're in luck because the guys also have an Egyptian-built example of the K for comparison. Production of the M76 lasted from 1967 until about 1974, after which it was slowly superseded in Navy service by more advanced SMGs.
