The surprise launch and success of Sputnik by the Soviet Union in 1957 embarrassed the U.S. and triggered the Space Race. Two APL scientists discovered that they could accurately track the small satellite by measuring its Doppler Shift from a fixed location. The head of APL’s Research Center “reversed” the equation, proposing that one could accurately track their location on Earth if they knew the position of an orbiting satellite. This gave rise to the first all-weather, accurate satellite-based navigation and positioning system, Transit. Developed and operated by APL, Transit became a vital tool in the strategic triad of deterrence. Transit operated from 1964 to 1996 and was the forerunner of the modern satellite-based navigation and positioning systems we use every day.
