“Shchedryk” or “Carol of the bells” is a symbol of Christmas all over the world and has over 1000 different versions.

It was written by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych based on the ancient pre-Christian Ukrainian folk melody.

It became popular after European and American tour to promote Ukrainian culture in its fight for independence against Bolshevik Russia.

In 1921 Ukraine was occupied and Mykola Leontovych was killed by a VChK (All-Russian Extraordinary Commission) agent for being one of the prominent Ukrainian intellectuals. He was shot in his parents house while being asleep at night.
