Tonight I captured Comet C/2026 A1 (MAPS) — a faint sungrazing comet currently inbound toward the Sun.
Right now it appears dim, but that’s not unusual. Many Kreutz sungrazers remain faint until they approach the Sun, when solar heating activates volatile ices and dramatically increases outgassing. If this comet survives its close solar passage, it could brighten rapidly in the coming weeks.
In this video I show my real-time capture, live faint views, and explain why brightness does not depend on distance alone — including a comparison with Comets that appeared brighter much farther from the Sun.
☄️ What you’ll see:
• My telescope capture of Comet C/2026 A1
• Live faint detection views
• Distance & brightness explanation
• Why sungrazers can brighten suddenly
• What to watch for in the coming days
This comet is part of the historic Kreutz sungrazer family, fragments of a giant comet seen for centuries. As it heads toward perihelion, the Sun will determine its fate — survival, fragmentation, or a dramatic brightening event.
If it brightens, we could be witnessing the early stages of a spectacular solar encounter.
