The NFL's Houston Oilers moved to Tennessee in 1997, taking their history, name and logo with them. Rebranded as the Titans in 1999, the NFL agreed to retire the Oiler name. Oilers history should be returned to Houston, which could be achieved by giving the Houston Texans a historical ownership stake in Houston's former NFL franchise. Such a stake would mean, among other things, that the Texans would wear the Oilers' old uniforms on throwback game days. Besides sentimental and historical reasons, returning the Oilers to Houston in this manner would be of financial interest of the Titans and NFL as well. #BringOilersHome #LuvYaBlue #LetDeShaunWear1 Bum Phillips Charities Taylor Blitz Times SportsRadio 610
The Houston Oilers moved to Tennessee in 1997, taking their history, name and logo with them. Rebranded as the Titans in 1999, the NFL agreed to retire the Oiler name. Stored in Tennessee, Oilers history has been, in the words of former Oiler/Titan Frank Wycheck, “put on the shelf in a dusty warehouse like ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark.’” That is not a knock on Tennessee fans, who have done a great job of supporting the Titans. The team selling out every home game during a fifteen-year period from 1999-2014 speaks for itself. But in the words of Oilers/Titans Hall of Fame OL Bruce Matthews, “(people in Nashville) don’t care about Oilers history. And I can’t blame them. But people in Houston would appreciate it.” To Matthews point, over three-quarters of this page’s followers are from the greater Houston area, according to Facebook statistics. Fewer than one percent are from Nashville, with Mexico City and Los Angeles clocking more “likes.”
Matthews urged that Oilers’ history be turned over to the Texans.
There are three key elements to the return of the Oilers history to Houston, all with the aim of giving the Texans a historical ownership stake in the team that shares its first name and geographic home: 1) Allowing the Texans to wear the Oilers uniforms on throwback game days. Prominent Texans such as DeShaun Watson and J.J. Watt have already enthusiastically endorsed this idea, with Watt tweeting recently that “it’s such a shame we can’t rock the baby blue Houston Oilers uniforms.” Watson recently posted a photo of him on Instagram wearing a Columbia Blue jersey. #LetDeShaunWear1 2) Creating a Houston NFL Ring of Honor at NRG Stadium, the Texans’ home field. Any ceremony during the NFL regular season that honors Robert Brazille for his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year should be held in Houston not Nashville—at halftime during a Texans home game where he will be in front of many fans who saw him play in the Astrodome druing his career. 3) Establishing Oilers history as part of the Texans history through the creation of an official Houston NFL history. Oilers history could be shared with the Titans and, in fact , here is precedent for such an arrangement in the NBA—the Oklahoma Thunder, which moved to the state from Seattle in 2008, will share the original SuperSonics history with the city when the NBA returns there.
For a number of reasons, the return of Oilers history to its home city after years of absence is not as far-fetched as it might sound. The first of these relates to the precedent established in other sports leagues: The NBA Hornets’ logo and history were restored to Charlotte in 2014 after the team had moved to New Orleans in 2002 and had retained the Hornets’ name. The second concerns the financial incentive for the entire NFL of Oilers history being turned over to the Texans—consider the excitement that would be generated by the Texans wearing the Oilers’ throwback jerseys. Sales of Oiler shirts and merchandise would likely skyrocket—you don’t need a marketing degree to bet the farm that Columbia Blue will outsell Battle Red. Since each NFL franchise receives an equal share of the league's "national revenue" from licensing and merchandise, sales, all teams would benefit from the increase in demand for Oiler jerseys and related items. Equal revenue sharing is why a limited number of Oiler items are sold on both the Texans and the Titan NFL sites. Finally, the third reason is related to the second—given this equal revenue sharing arrangement from licensing and merchandise sales, the question of who actually owns the Oilers trademark (Houston Oilers LLC) is not as big an obstacle as it otherwise would be if each team profited individually from its own brand. Ms.Adams Strunk as ontrolling owner of the Titans, the Texans and the NFL would simply have to agree to make the Houston Texans a stakeholder in the history of the Oilers. Doing so would almost certainly increase substantially the value of a brand whose value is in Houston, where it will have value it does not have currently in Nashville.
