Memorial Tribute Video for Xerxes the Lion, who sadly passed away on Feb. 23 at age 14 due to late-stage kidney failure. Xerxes was born in 2007 in Oklahoma and lived in El Paso before moving to Seattle to become King of Woodland Park Zoo in 2014. He sired three healthy male cubs with Adia, the resident female, under the accredited Species Survival Program who have since gone onto start their own prides at different zoos.
Xerxes was a gentle giant, with a calm demeanor, and was a great father to his cubs. He was quite photogenic with a striking, blended mane that went from tawny to dark, and loved to vocalize through roars, as well as unique low grumbles, moans, and a "chuff" like a tiger.
I visited Xerxes more than 60 times since his debut in 2014 and got to know him very well through observation and talking with volunteers and his keepers. A truly sad day for the WPZ family and anyone who knew this amazing big cat. Rest In Peace Xerxes, there will never be another like you!
