‘The Central Highlands has been a big part of my life. My Great Uncle used to tell stories of ‘the land of 1,000 lakes’ as the old timers called it. His name was Mafeking Carter, a famous bushman, hunter, trapper and prospector from the northwest coast who spent a lifetime working in the high country. He loved our wild places - it’s where his soul was.
I’ve walked through a lot of the highlands, exploring the Walls of Jerusalem, Cradle Mountain and recently navigating the Central Plateau as a fly fisherman. I’ve seen just how fragile this area can be, and I know that protecting Pine Tier and linking it with existing nature reserves will provide a sustainable tract of wild country for future generations to enjoy.
Pine Tier is rich in natural values and human connection. Protecting its multiple rivers, wetlands, valleys, woodlands and forests isn’t about locking people out, it’s about our community taking on the role of custodian of this special piece of land.’ - Gerard Castles
