This year in recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King Day we look back almost fifty-five years to the summer of 1964, when the movement to desegregate public and private spaces in St. Augustine sparked tension and violence.
Dr. King's arrival in the city did not calm the situation; in fact, he was arrested during a protest at the Monson Motor Lodge in the city, his only arrest in Florida.
This excerpt from a WCKT-TV news special, "Outlook: St. Augustine: Fountain of Dissent - Report 3," is a report on the incident.
