The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift is a 2006 action movie directed by Justin Lin and written by Chris Morgan. It's the third movie in the Fast & Furious series and a standalone sequel to the earlier films. The story follows Sean Boswell, a car enthusiast played by Lucas Black, who moves to Tokyo and discovers the city's drifting community.
The idea for the film was confirmed in June 2005, with Lin chosen as the director and Morgan joining soon after. The movie marked the beginning of a long collaboration between Lin, Morgan, actor Sung Kang, and composer Brian Tyler. Filming took place in Los Angeles and Tokyo from August to November 2005, making it the first in the series to feature an international location.
Tokyo Drift premiered in Los Angeles on June 4, 2006, and was released in the United States on June 16. Despite grossing $159 million worldwide, it is the lowest-earning film in the franchise. Critics had mixed reviews, praising the driving sequences but criticizing the screenplay and acting. Over time, some have viewed it more favorably, considering it one of the franchise's best. The movie is part of a larger series, set after "Fast & Furious 6" and before "Furious 7," with additional prequel films and a direct sequel following later.
The story plot:
In Oro Valley, Arizona, Sean Boswell races a classmate, Clay, leading to a crash. Since Clay escapes trouble due to his wealthy family, Sean, a troublemaker, is sent to Tokyo to live with his Navy lieutenant father to avoid jail. There, he befriends Twinkie and discovers drift racing. Sean clashes with Takashi, the Drift King, and wrecks a car in a race.
To repay the damage, Sean works for Han, learning drift racing. Sean earns respect, defeats Takashi's lieutenant, and becomes friends with Han. Sean asks out Neela, Takashi's girlfriend, leading to a confrontation. Neela moves in with Sean and Han after leaving Takashi. A chase ensues when Takashi and Morimoto confront them.
During the chase, Han's car explodes, and Takashi draws a gun on Sean. Sean's father intervenes, and Neela agrees to leave with Takashi. Sean makes amends with his father, Twinkie gives Sean money to repay a debt, and Sean challenges Takashi to a drift race to settle things. They modify Sean's father's Mustang for drifting.
In the race, Sean catches up to Takashi, who resorts to ramming but ends up crashing. Sean is declared the new Drift King, staying in Tokyo. Neela, Twinkie, and Sean enjoy a car meet when Dominic Toretto arrives, challenging Sean to a race in honor of Han. Sean accepts, acknowledging Han as family.
