During the Battle of Stalingrad in 1943, the German Sixth Army was completely surrounded by Soviet forces. As defeat became inevitable, Adolf Hitler made a chilling move: he promoted General Friedrich Paulus to Field Marshal.
The message was unmistakable.
No German Field Marshal had ever surrendered. By tradition, the rank implied death before capture—either in battle or by suicide. Hitler was effectively telling Paulus to kill himself rather than surrender.
Paulus refused.
Breaking centuries of military tradition and defying Hitler’s expectations, Paulus surrendered to the Red Army, saving the remaining soldiers under his command. It marked the first time in German history that a Field Marshal had been captured alive—and symbolized a catastrophic turning point for Nazi Germany.
