The Lexington Was Abandoned After Being Torpedoed at Coral Sea Japanese torpedo bombers scored multiple hits on the USS Lexington ("Lady Lex"). While the massive carrier initially seemed to survive the attack, catastrophic secondary explosions from leaking aviation fuel vapors triggered uncontrollable fires. The damage control efforts ultimately failed, forcing the crew to abandon ship. The Lexington was later scuttled by American destroyers to prevent its capture. The loss of this veteran carrier was a heavy blow, but the battle prevented the Japanese invasion of Port Moresby.

The Lexington was one of the first U.S. aircraft carriers, converted from a battlecruiser hull. Its loss at Coral Sea marked the end of an era for the pre-war carrier fleet.
