🏥 The largest nurses strike in New York City history is underway at the city's three main private hospital groups—Mount Sinai, Montefiore and NewYork-Presbyterian—as administrators and union representatives struggle to agree on a contract.
"We're very strong, NYP nurses are very strong, and I feel like we're going to get whatever we want because we're united," said Courtney, a three-year veteran of the NICU unit at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in Washington Heights.
"All our babies deserve our undivided attention, and they're not always getting that," she continued, striking on one of the fundamental demands of the nurses: staffing ratios to improve patient safety. The New York State Nurses Association said that about 15,000 nurses are on strike, and while specific demands vary by hospital, other main points of contention are nurse security, the use of AI in hospitals, maintaining benefits and wages.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani met nurses at the picket line in solidarity and made remarks calling on the "wealthiest" hospital groups "in the entire city" to reach a deal with the workers.
"The hospital executives who run these hospitals, the ones where these hardworking nurses are asking for what they deserve—these executives are not having difficulty making ends meet," the mayor said.
