On 20th August 2025, we had no idea of what was to happen to Dougie.
He was a normal happy boy in the day of the night that we noticed strange behaviour in him.
We didn't know that Dougie was displaying signs of IVDD. We hadn't even heard of it.
But just the night later, both of Dougies back legs were completely paralysed.
IVDD can affect any dog, however some breeds are more prone to getting it, one being French Bulldogs. This is because of their short legs. Other common breeds include:-
Dachshunds (most commonly affected), Shih Tzus, Pekingese, Beagles, Corgis, Basset Hounds, and Cocker Spaniels.
What is IVDD?
Intervertebral Disc Disease, also known as a herniated, ruptured or slipped disc, is where the cushioned parts between the vertebrae bulges, hardens, or ruptures. This causes intense pain, damage to the nerves, and even paralysis. It's a consequence from repeated knocks (from jumping / running around), or from one singular fall.
Treatment includes medication, strict rest, and in some cases, surgery. It all depends on how severe it is and how well the dog responds to the medication. Sadly, some dogs don't get past this stage, and even those that have surgery, sometimes don't have the best outcome. But there are known cases of dogs having surgery and they are walking again.
Very luckily and very gratefully, Dougie responded well to the treatment immediately. He didn't require surgery as he was showing signs of progression as the days were going on and he was walking again within just 2 weeks.
This amazing miracle was a result from serious hard work and dedication. One of us works full time from home (again, very gratefully), so was juggling a job and looking after Dougie. He required close monitoring, regular cleaning and bathing, assistance with toileting as he was incontinent (and is still a little bit now), and physiotherapy to help strengthen his muscles and to avoid muscle deterioration.
Whilst we were determined and had strong faith in him, we did not expect him to be walking again so soon, especially without surgery.
99% of what we understand about the disease, has been from experience and researching about it for hours. We found there wasn't much content on the condition; signs of the disease, how dogs can get it, what life is like with a dog that has it, recovery stories, and products that can help.
This is why we have created this channel because we want to raise awareness about IVDD, to help others with a dog, who may get a dog in the future, or who may know of someone with a dog.
If we help just 1 dog, we've done our job.
