Explained: Why India–EU FTA could be a game changer for Indian exports

Описание: India and the European Union are in the final stage of negotiations for a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA), with a formal announcement expected on January 27. If sealed, it will become India’s biggest trade deal so far, covering commerce with the 27-nation European Union, one of India’s largest export destinations.

Experts believe the India–EU FTA is not just a trade pact, but a strategic reset that can integrate India deeper into global value chains while offering EU companies access to a fast-growing, large and stable market.

According to exporters and industry voices, the agreement is expected to boost Indian shipments in key sectors such as textiles & apparel, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, engineering goods, gems & jewellery, leather, petroleum products, and iron & steel. With EU tariffs likely to be phased out, estimates suggest Indian exports to Europe could double over the next three years, improving competitiveness and market access.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has described the India–EU FTA as the “mother of all deals,” calling it a win-win agreement that can help Indian exporters diversify markets amid high US tariffs and reduce dependence on any one trading partner.
