Storm Goretti hit Cornwall on Thursday 9th January 2026 and caused a tremendous amount of damage here at Paradise Park Wildlife Sanctuary in Hayle.
Precautions were put in place in preparation of the storms arrival and staff did everything they could to help protect the birds and animals.
Everyone was so concerned during that evening, hearing the strength of the storm and knowing we had to sit and wait it out. The Keepers checked the birds and other animals at the Park first thing on the Friday morning just as it started to get light, as well as dealing with some immediate damage to aviaries. But sadly, found two birds, a Bishop Weaver and a Sun Conure had not made it through the storm. We were so worried but considering the strength of the wind, the fallen trees and missing roof panels, we were relieved it was not a lot worse.
Damage at the Park included:
Ripped netting opened up a big hole in one of the off-show chough winter flocking aviaries. Thankfully, none were missing.
'Talis' the Golden Eagle's aviary had partially collapsed.
In the walled garden, the Tropical House had cracked glass, and roof panels which give shelter from rain on many aviaries had blown off.
Two massive trees near the Lear's Macaw Centre fell across a walkway, through fencing, onto picnic tables and into the outdoor play area.
Lots of fallen trees through the woodland walk, damaging fencing and a waterproof electrical cabinet.
A huge branch fell straight through the bridge walkway into ‘Parrot Jungle’ with boardwalk and fence damage.
Large trees fallen near the Fun Farm and in front of Glanmor House at the centre of the Park.
The large fan vent on the roof of the JungleBarn had shifted sideways.
Twigs, branches and leaf litter debris everywhere around the Park.
A big thank you to all who offered help with the clear up. Many staff came in on their day off, and Director Nick and the team got started on the most important repairs and start on the removal of trees. The Park closed for 5 days after the storm to allow time to make the site safe again for visitors, but there is still plenty more work to be done.
With heartfelt thanks from all of us at Paradise Park xx
