A scary accident took place in a residential building lift in Goregaon, Mumbai, when gas-filled balloons suddenly exploded, injuring two people but luckily not killing anyone.
The incident happened on 2 February around 10:30 pm at Anmol Tower and was captured on the lift’s CCTV camera. At the time of the blast, three people were inside the lift.
A 21-year-old woman, Himani Tapriya from Surat, had entered the lift while visiting her aunt. Along with her, a 32-year-old delivery man, Raju Kumar Mahato, entered carrying 10 to 12 gas-filled balloons meant for a birthday celebration in the building. Another man was also present inside the lift.
Just seconds later, the balloons burst and caused a sudden explosion. Flames were clearly visible in the CCTV footage. Since the lift doors were not fully closed, all three managed to rush out in time, which saved their lives.
Himani suffered burn injuries on her arm, neck, and stomach, while Raju suffered minor burns. Both were taken for medical treatment, and police confirmed that Himani is now out of danger.
Police have registered a negligence case against the balloon shop owner under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act. Officials said the shop owner failed to give proper safety instructions or protection to the delivery worker. A legal notice has been issued, and further investigation is ongoing.
Authorities are also checking what type of gas was used in the balloons. Experts warn that hydrogen-filled balloons are extremely dangerous, especially in closed spaces like lifts, as even a small spark can cause a powerful explosion. Helium, on the other hand, is safe and non-flammable.
Police have reminded people that carrying flammable gas in lifts is illegal and risky, and such negligence can lead to serious injuries or loss of life.
