USC Dornsife Center for the Political Future (CPF) presents the "California at 175: Stuck or Moving Forward?" conference on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
Panels featuring experts in politics, policy, campaigns, and strategy analyzed the most pressing questions facing the Golden State today, explored California’s evolving role in national politics, and analyzed what recent moments reveal about California’s political future. This conference was in partnership with the USC Open Dialogue Project and USC Casden Institute, as well as the student organizations USC Political Union (a chapter of BridgeUSA), Trojan Democrats, and USC College Republicans.
Panel 3: "First in Taxes, First in Results?"
Former Los Angeles Controller Ron Galperin moderated a conversation with political experts David Crane, Bob Hertzberg, and Richard Leib on how California's tax structure compares nationally. They discussed whether the state's high revenue levels translate into effective public and private outcomes, and what reforms could better align fiscal policy with performance. The conference concluded with closing remarks from CPF Managing Director Kamy Akhavan.
Featuring:

Bob Hertzberg: Former Speaker, California State Assembly; Former Majority Leader, California State Senate
