Finding Net Force on Multiple Charges
To determine the net force on a particular charge due to multiple other charges:
Apply Coulomb’s Law: Calculate the force exerted by each charge on the target charge individually.
Consider Direction: Electrostatic force is a vector quantity. Repulsion occurs between like charges, and attraction occurs between opposite charges.
Use Vector Addition: Resolve forces into components (if needed) and sum them using vector addition to determine the net force.
Find Resultant Force: Use Pythagoras’ theorem or vector algebra to compute the magnitude and direction of the net force.
SOLVED PROBELMS :
1. An infinite number of charges, each equal to 4C, are placed along the x-axis at x = 1 m, x = 2 m, x = 4 m, x = 8 m and so on. The total force on a charge of 1C placed at the origin is
2. Consider three charges q1,q2,q3 each equal to q at the vertices of an equilateral triangle of side l. What is the force on a charge Q (with the same sign as q) placed at the centroid of the triangle.?
3.Three point charges + q each are kept at the vertices of an equilateral triangle of side l. Determine the magnitude and sign of charge to be kept at the centroid so that charges at the vertices remain in equillibrium.
4. Consider the charges q,q and -q placed at the vertices of an equilateral triangle of each side l. What is the force on each charge ?
5. charges of +5 micro coulomb, + 10 and -10 microcoulomb are placed in air at the corners A,B,C of equilateral triangle ABC, Having each side equal to 5 cm
