According to ancient custom, the Mutual Salutation (V. The Lord be with you; R. And with thy spirit) was said only by clergy. With these words a deacon, priest, or bishop – together with the gathered congregation – expresses the desire for the Lord to be present in our prayers. This same desire is expressed by layfolk with the following prayer: V. O Lord, hear our prayer; R. And let our cry come unto thee. Trinity House Officiants who are not in holy orders will replace the Mutual Salutation with these prayers any time at which the Mutual Salutation would otherwise be said in the Office.

Officiant: The Lord be with you. (O Lord, hear our prayer.)
People: And with thy spirit. (And let our cry come unto thee.)
Officiant: Let us bless the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
Officiant: May the souls of the faithful, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
People: Amen.
Then all pray "Our Father," etc., silently.
Officiant: The Lord give us his peace.
People: And life everlasting. Amen.
