When an infestation breaks out and you need to treat it at its source, looks for products made with fipronil. Fipronil is a phenylpyrazole used to control pests like ants, beetles, cockroaches, fleas, and ticks.

Fipronil, first registered by the US EPA in 1996, is a phenylpyrazole insecticide used to control many insect pests in households, commercial properties, and agriculture. Phenylpyrazole insecticides are relatively new in the pesticide industry, having been created to combat increasing resistance against more common pesticides developing in target insects. Fipronil can be found in many products like liquids, granules, and bait gels.

Fipronil is in the phenylpyrazole class of insecticides, so its mode of action is by contact or by ingestion. These work to interfere with the pest’s central nervous system, inflicting paralysis. This creates an inability to function or eat, eventually leading to the pest’s death. Depending on the formulation, it can take minutes to several hours for exposed pests to die.

In some applications, fipronil will leave lasting residuals that will control treated areas for some time after application. Fipronil is non-repelling and cannot be detected by pests. When applied to areas where activity is known to take place, a pest can come in contact with the residual without knowing. This is an effective strategy for many pests, like ants, where visible signs of control can potentially make an infestation worse. Fipronil also has a systemic effect. Pests that have come in contact with the product or its residual barrier will spread the poison to others, setting off a chain reaction and eliminating nests and colonies.
