The Giles – Fuertes´s Parrot Bird Reserve was established to ensure the habitat conservation of Fuertes’s Parrot (Hapalopsittaca fuertesi) and the resident and migratory birds that frequent it.

Location and Area:

It is located on the eastern flank of the Central Cordillera of Colombia, in the village of Potosi Alto, in the town of Cajamarca, Tolima. Its altitudinal range extends from the 2.750 up to 3.600 m above sea level. It has an area of approximately 726 acres between the fragile ecosystems of the Andean forest, high Andean plateaus of the central cordillera of Colombia, in which live Fuertes’s Parrot and the Golden-plumed Parakeet(Leptosittaca branickii). Biological importance:

There are species of high conservation significance like the Fuertes’s Parrot (Hapalopsittaca fuertesi), an endemic and critically endangered species, the Golden-plumed Parakeet (Leptosittaca branickii), a species considered vulnerable, and the Rufous-fronted parakeet (Bolborhynchus ferrugineifrons), an endemic species considered endangered and some species of mammals like the spectacled bear (Tremarctus ornatus).
