Nigeria has the largest economy in Sub-Saharan Africa, but still faces limitations in its power sector. Nigeria has abundant oil, gas, hydro, and solar resources, and existing plants have the capacity to generate 12,522 MW of electricity. On most days, it can only dispatch around 4,000 MW, which is insufficient for a country with a population of over 195 million people.
The Nigerian power sector faces numerous broad challenges related to electricity policy implementation, regulatory uncertainty, gas supply, transmission system constraints, and major power sector planning shortfalls that have prevented the sector from reaching commercial viability.
In this video, I discuss the problem and possible solutions.
