In this video (Part 2), we break down the important terminology and geometric formulas used in the Design of Helical Springs. Understanding these terms is crucial before solving numerical problems in Design of Machine Elements (DME).
We explain the logic behind the formulas for Solid Length, Free Length, and Pitch using simple diagrams.
📌 Topics & Formulas Covered:
1. Solid Length (Ls): The length when the spring is fully compressed.
Formula: Ls = n' × d
2. Free Length (Lf): The length of the spring when no load is applied.
Formula: Lf = Solid Length + Max Deflection + Clearance
3. Spring Index (C): The ratio of mean diameter to wire diameter (D/d).
4. Spring Rate / Stiffness (k): Load required per unit deflection.
5. Pitch (p): The distance between two adjacent coils.
