Описание: Montessori Language Activity - How to Play Montessori "I Spy" Game

A tutorial for parents and caregivers showing how to play the Montessori "I Spy" language activity comprising 6 stages that will be played over a period of time to help children become aware of and learn to analyze the sounds in the spoken English language.

You can lead your child through six different stages over a period of approximately one to two years.

A good time to play the “I Spy” game is when you are just waiting or relaxing together.

Play each stage for at least a few months with your child before moving on to the next stage. When playing with a mixed age group, rotate between the various stages as necessary so that everyone can participate at their own level.

S T E P 1:

• Hold a single familiar object or picture of an isolated object in your hand so your child/ren can see it.
• Look at the object, and say ‘I spy with my little eye something beginning with ( ), giving the first phonetic sound in the object’s name (e.g. pen – remember that ‘p’ is pronounced as "ppp"as in lip.
• Prompt a guess if necessary, and when you hear the correct answer, acknowledge it by immediately repeating the word and sound (‘pen begins with ppp').

S T E P 2:

• The same as step 1 (see previous ’I Spy’ post in feed), but hold or place down two familiar objects/picture cards, the names of which do not begin with the same sound.
• Look at them both, but ‘I Spy’ just one of them by giving its first sound.
• When a correct answer is given, repeat the word and sound.
• Repeat this process with another pair of objects/picture cards.
• Later, repeat the process with three and then more objects/picture cards only one of which has a name beginning with the given sound.

S T E P 3:

The same as step 2, but now...

• Broaden the field of possible objects to include everything in a small section of the environment, such as a corner of the room
• Acknowledge all words that begin with the designated sound by repeating the word and sound.
• Repeat the process for the same, or another, small section of the environment
• Later, repeat the process for a larger section of the environment, and then for the entire visible environment.

S T E P 4:

The same as step 3, but now...

• Indicate both the first and last sounds of the name of the object you have in mind, saying, ‘I spy with my little eye something that begins with ( ) and ends with ( ).
• Acknowledge correct answers by immediately repeating the word and both sounds, saying, ‘…. Begins with ( ) and ends with ( ).

S T E P 5:

Start with Step 4.

• Select a small word made up of only three sounds.
• Now draw attention to the remaining middle sound of the word and then say all three sounds separately but in sequence.
• After analyzing three-sound words, gradually work up to four-sound and five-sound words.
• Each time the object is guessed, analyse all the middle sounds and then all the sounds in sequence.
• Work towards being able to analyse words without needing to play the “I Spy” game first.

S T E P 6:

• Ask your child to think of any word with a chosen sound without the prompt of seeing a particular object. For example ‘Can you think of a word with the sound ‘e’ in it?’
• Later, when your child is capable of this, repeat the question with two different sounds asking, ‘Can you think of a word with the sounds ( ) and ( ) in it?’ .
