As I now began to recount this moment, I had a sudden epiphany, a "wild thought", an imaginative conjecture, which Bion personally taught me always to respect. In my reverie I thought of down-grading Freud's (and Klein's) life and death instincts, reconfiguring them, and subordinating them to entelechy and conatus (conation). Entelechy, you recall, is the activation of one's total inherent potential. It includes the life force, the sexual drives, and more—that is, all that you can be. Conatus is the principle of self-organization and self-regulation and functions as defences and resistances when necessary for adaptation and survival. The death instinct reports to it, not the other way around. I thought this alteration in theory was necessary for Bion's metatheory because his panoramic protocol fails to consider (or at least to emphasize) the vital forces impinging on one's emotional frontier. He did reroute and reconfigure the drives, in part, to L, H, and K emotional linkages, but he did not reckon wit h the economic (force) aspects. I think that entelechy and conatus do.

In introducing O to the analytical lexicon, Bion is not proposing another reality "behind" the apprehensible one; he is referring to the reality of what is, a reality that we do not create, a reality that precedes and follows us, and is independent of any human act of knowing, perceiving or apprehending.
