Описание: Creating new infrastructure within an already thriving city is a huge challenge. Building huge tunnels such as this one in Algiers, the capital city of Algeria, means working with limited site space, and transporting, erecting, and operating equipment all within the confines of the existing city.

Once Sarens’ equipment is prepared, the heavy lifting can begin! The most unique and technically challenging lift of the project is the installation of the cutting head- a massive single component more than 10m in diameter. Its enormous proportions are only part of the challenge. Due to the disc shape of the component and the twist that is required to get it from its transportation position to its working position, two cranes work in unison to control the movement and allow the tool to be safely lowered into position where it can take its place as the critical tool at the front of the machine.

The total weight of the tunnel boring machine once installed is a whopping 1465T, all of which needs to be installed 30 meters below the operating height of the crane. Once installed the machine, equipped with state-of-the-art technology for the drilling and pumping of reinforced concrete, can excavate between 16 and 24 meters every day until it has completed the 104m stretch of tunnel required.

The project is constructing an important extension to the Algiers Metro.
