On Saturday night, ICE agents arrested Mahmoud Khalil—a Palestinian graduate student and activist from Columbia University—at his university-owned residence in Manhattan. Khalil, who emerged as a key leader during pro-Palestinian protests on campus, was detained after agents claimed his student visa had been revoked on orders from the State Department. However, his attorney, Amy E. Greer, stressed that Khalil is a lawful permanent resident holding a green card, arguing that his detention is both unwarranted and politically motivated.
Witnesses reported that during the arrest, ICE agents even threatened Khalil’s eight‐month–pregnant wife, adding to the controversy surrounding the operation. The incident has sparked widespread criticism from civil rights groups and campus activists, who see it as part of a broader crackdown on dissent and political speech under current federal policies targeting international students involved in protests against Israel’s actions in Gaza.
In response, Khalil’s legal team filed a habeas corpus petition challenging the legality of his arrest. Meanwhile, Columbia University reiterated that law enforcement must obtain a judicial warrant before entering non-public campus areas but did not comment further on the specifics of the case.
The arrest has ignited protests and online petitions demanding Khalil’s immediate release, with critics warning that such actions could have a chilling effect on free speech and campus activism across the nation.
