The Washington State Attorney General’s Office said on Friday that it believes the court will grant the release of Spokane's "South Hill Rapist" Kevin Coe on Oct. 2.
Coe was accused of multiple rapes in Spokane in the 1970s and 80s and was sentenced to life plus 75 years in prison. Some of the convictions against him were overturned, but his status as a sexually violent predator has kept him in state custody.
Coe has been involuntarily confined to McNeil Island since 2008, but back in January, his public defender asked for an end to his civil commitment.
By law, the state must evaluate him every year and prove he’s mentally ill and dangerous to keep him confined. In a July 2024 report, a psychologist with the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) found that Coe no longer meets the criteria.
