The Great Wall of China is one of the most famous and impressive structures in human history, stretching across thousands of miles of rugged terrain in northern China. It is not a single continuous wall but a network of fortifications built over more than two thousand years by different Chinese dynasties to protect against invasions from the north. Beginning as early as the 7th century BCE, older sections of walls were connected and expanded by Emperor Qin Shi Huang around 220 BCE to form a unified defence system. Later dynasties, especially the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644 CE), rebuilt and strengthened much of the wall, using stone and brick to create watchtowers, fortresses, and defensive barriers that still stand today. Recognized for its historical, strategic, and architectural importance, the Great Wall was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and remains a powerful symbol of China’s cultural heritage and ancient engineering achievements.
