Is God necessary for morality?
Are good deeds inherently good or are they only deemed as such because God says so?
How did Muslim scholars grapple with new ethical questions when their answers were unclear?
For centuries Muslim theologians and philosophers have debated these questions and offered competing answers. In this presentation, Dr. Nebil Husayn briefly examines Muslim scholarly debates on morality and the tensions that existed between rationalists and those who sought all of their answers from sacred texts.
On Nov 19th, 2025, at the University of Toronto at 6:00PM, we gathered for a presentation by Dr. Nebil Husayn (University of Miami), a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Shi'a Research Institute.
Dr. Nebil Husayn is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Miami. His research broadly considers the development of Islamic theology, historiography and debates on the caliphate. Husayn obtained his Ph.D. in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton University and an M.A. in Arabic and Islamic Studies from Harvard University. Husayn is the recipient of a Fulbright award and the University of Miami Fellowship in the Arts and Humanities. He is the author of Opposing the Imam (2021) and Caliphate and Imamate (2023).
