5 Minute Model Pine Trees - Static Grass Method

Описание: A timelapse of me creating model pine trees using the static grass method. Note that the trees I am trying to model here are Lodgepole pine, Engelmann spruce and Subalpine Fir trees commonly found in the Rocky Mountains. Always consult photos when shaping your trees.

A very cheap and fairly easy way to make realistic looking pine trees. I've got it down to about 10 minutes per two 6" trees or 5 minutes per one 6" tree.

Right now I am using surveyors flag wire because I have a whole bunch of them and it's free. Thinner gauge wire would be better though, I think surveyors wire is a little to thick for HO scale tree trunks.

The basic process is as follows:

1. Install a 12" piece in something that can turn it slowly. Not necessary but it does speed up the process. You could also do more trees at once but 12" and my drill is all I can fit in my spray booth.

2. Spray Krylon Matte Medium or 3M super 77 on the wire to begin the first layer. Sprinkle sawdust to give the appearance of bark and also give the static grass something to adhere to. Make it as thick as you want.

3. Alternate between the spray and Noch 12mm static grass. Build it up slowly in layers. I make the bottom half of the tree thicker than the top.

4. Once your happy with the shape of the tree spray it with a light coating of grey primer to give the appearance of dead branches and bark.

5. Alternate spray adhesive and Noch 2 mm static grass. This adds needles and volume to the branches.

6. Alternate spray adhesive and Woodland Scenics fine turf to give the tree even more volume and its final shape. Be careful not to add too much at this point as there's a lot of weight on the armature and the adhesive hasn't set yet.

7. Cut to length and remove from drill. You can lightly shape the branches at this point but be careful because the adhesive is still drying.
