In a surprising turn at a recent closed-door RSS economic meeting in Delhi, veteran BJP leader and former party president Murli Manohar Joshi boldly questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's economic policies. At 91, Joshi, a longtime RSS affiliate, highlighted stark income inequality—where the top 10% control 65% of wealth—and India's low per capita GDP of just $2,878, despite its status as the world's third-largest economy. Quoting Nobel economist Amartya Sen, he argued that growth alone ignores well-being, proposing "Degrowth" for sustainable sharing and simplicity, rooted in Deendayal Upadhyay's Integral Humanism. He also warned of AI-driven disparities, low college enrollment, agriculture's shrinking role, and a "climate emergency" amid disasters in Uttarakhand and Himachal. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat praised Joshi's presentation as spot-on.
