Abilene ISD has selected Dr. Joseph Waldron as its lone finalist for superintendent, putting the district on track to name a new leader after a state-mandated waiting period.
At a press conference Thursday, Waldron said he was grateful for the opportunity.

“My first reaction was to be extremely grateful and thankful to the board for trusting me with the opportunity to serve our school district as its leader,” Waldron said.
Waldron currently serves as the district’s deputy superintendent, overseeing daily operations, personnel and long-term planning. He also steps in as chief administrative officer when the superintendent is out.
He first joined Abilene ISD in 2019 in human resources, later serving as chief financial officer and associate superintendent for operations.
Waldron said leadership starts with trust.
“Most important thing, to me, is that relationship built on trust and. It was kind of emotional, actually,” he said.
He described the superintendent search process as personal and emotional.
“There have been two times where the board has asked me to to speak last night, doctor. We did. And, early on in this process, Angie did. And when I say stuff like, I can't stop and think about it too much because it's it means a lot to me,” Waldron said.
Waldron said the role is especially meaningful because of his ties to the community and the students the district serves.
“Representing this district means the world to me. Not only does my family call this place home, but, you know, Abilene is home to everyone. Nice to you. So to 14,500 students, taking care of them is, is a mission filled with days and days of service. Challenging young adults to become equipped for their brightest future. It means the world,” he said.

Looking ahead, Waldron outlined priorities he said will guide his start as superintendent.
“Forward, the vision for my beginning as superintendent is in Abilene. I-s-d is built on three things. Carry forward our momentum, raise the floor academically for all of our students, and to build, and foster healthy relationships, both in our district and in our community,” Waldron said.
A board-approved transition plan through May 31 with Waldron set to officially step into the role June 1.
