Perdy’s giving birth!
This video was made to help educate people on what a normal alpaca birth is like. The cria (baby alpaca) normally hangs with it's head down during birth to allow fluids to drain from the mouth and nose. The mum will often rest at this point, even graze, she may also be waiting to ensure she is fully dilated before the shoulders are passed (widest part of the cria). The cria will roll to remove the sack once born, the dam does not lick them. Other than checking that the cria can breath (making sure the sack is not sealed across the mouth and nose) the owner should not intervene, unless the birth stops progressing normally. To do so when it is unnecessary could cause injury to dam or cria.
