The Forest Service Roadless Rule, adopted in 2001, protects nearly 60 million acres of roadless national forest lands across the United States. These areas provide critical wildlife habitat, safeguard clean water and preserve some of the country’s last intact roadless areas.
In this Wild Idea Community webinar, leading conservationists, scientists and policy experts explore the history of the Roadless Rule, what it protects and what’s at stake if the rule is removed.
This conversation includes expert analysis, discussion and attendee questions about how roadless areas support wildlife, protect treaty rights and contribute to outdoor recreation economies across the country.
The webinar also discusses how members of the public can make their voices heard as decisions about the future of these lands unfold.
In this webinar we cover:
• The history of the 2001 Forest Service Roadless Rule
• What values roadless areas protect for wildlife, water and wildlands
• How tribal nations view the rule and its connection to treaty rights
• The legal and policy landscape surrounding the rule
• The arguments being made for rescinding the rule
• How roadless lands support outdoor recreation and local economies
• How the public can engage in the decision-making process
Featured speakers include:
Chris Wood — CEO, Trout Unlimited
Greg Aplet — Senior Forest Scientist, The Wilderness Society
