Discover the St. Lawrence Seaway — the engineering marvel that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the heart of North America. This infrastructure documentary explores how Canada and the United States built one of the most ambitious navigation systems in history.
Opened in 1959 after five years of intense construction, the Seaway stretches 3,700 kilometres from the Atlantic to the head of Lake Superior. Its 15 locks lift massive ocean-going vessels 168 metres from sea level — the equivalent of a 55-storey building.
Today, over 40 million metric tonnes of cargo pass through this corridor annually: iron ore feeding steel mills, grain from the prairies reaching global markets, and manufactured goods moving between continents. The Seaway serves ports across two countries and eight U.S. states.
But what if this critical artery closed? Great Lakes manufacturing would halt, prairie grain exports via Thunder Bay would stop, and bulk commodities would require costly continental rerouting.
