A husband slapped his hearing-impaired wife, and she died.
Let me tell you what happened.
One hearing-impaired woman, Sugana (38 years old) lives in Chennai with her husband Ezhil Murugan ( 44 years Old) and her children.
The family lives on the first floor in the Nagi Reddy Thottam area of Guindy.
Suguna’s mother and relatives live on the ground floor in the same house.
The couple had an argument and a big fight. During that time husband slapped the wife hard on the face. Wife fell down after that.
After the slap wife became unconscious. She did not wake up and was not responding. The family quickly took her to Kalaignar Centenary Hospital.
It is a famous government hospital in Chennai.
The doctor checked her and said that she is already dead.
What happened next?
After this, husband went to the Guindy police station and told the police that he did it.
Police put the husband in custody and started questioning him
What did the police say?
After enquiring, police said that the domestic fight turned into physical violence. This violence caused the wife to die.
Suguna also had epilepsy and was taking treatment for that. What is epilepsy? It means a person who has this gets unconscious regularly and falls down.
The police are now continuing to ask questions about the incident to find why, how it happened. Let's wait and see what is going to happen next.
This is not the first time something like this has happened. Many women, including Deaf women, face violence inside their own homes.
That’s why India has a special law to protect women from this kind of abuse. It’s called the Domestic Violence Act 2005. Let me explain simply.
What does the law say?
This law helps women who are hurt, beaten, or abused by their husbands or family members.
If a woman is physically hurt, threatened, insulted, or controlled, it is domestic violence.
The law also protects women from emotional abuse (Hurting their feelings), sexual abuse (Touching women’s body without their permission), verbal abuse (Using bad words, shouting, Insulting), and financial abuse (Controlling money)
Even if the woman is not married but living with a man, the law can still help her.
What Can a Woman Do?
She can go to the police station or contact a Protection Officer.
She can also file a case in court.
The court can give orders like:
Ask the man to stay away or leave the house
Ask the man to pay money for her expenses
Give her protection and shelter
