STORYLINE:
A medieval lakeside town outside Rome and its residents braced themselves on Friday for an onslaught of fans, celebrities and paparazzi on the eve of the expected wedding of Hollywood actors Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.
Patrizia Riccioni mayor of the town of Bracciano, had clearly been won over by the pair, "I am very pleased" she said, "they've sent us these flowers after we met, and it has been a really sweet gesture".
Some fans already arrived in hopes of spotting the couple.
"This is like a fairy tale, so I am sure it will be gorgeous," said one US fan, currently studying in Florence.
Road signs outside Bracciano warned drivers that the centre of town would be closed to traffic all of Saturday to free the area around the 15th-century Odescalchi Castle, the likely venue for the celebrity wedding.
Meanwhile, the town's narrow streets teemed with journalists and camera crews.
In Rome, Cruise's and Holmes' families were seen leaving Grand Hotel where they are staying, and thought to be on their way to look around the Vatican.
Actress Brook Shields was also seen outside the hotel in Rome, after arriving in Italy on Thursday.
More VIP guests were expected to fly into Rome on Friday.
American actor Will Smith arrived ahead of the wedding and was greeted by the cameras shortly after he landed at the capital's Campiano airport.
English football star David Beckham and his singer wife Victoria were also rumoured to be on the star-studded guest list.
Cruise and Holmes became engaged in June 2005 and already have one daughter, Suri, who was born April 18 this year.
Cruise flew into Rome on Monday with an entourage of 10.
