This solution will oxidize wood to make new wood look old & vintage. Aging wood or distressing wood to look older like barn wood is so easy and is a such great technique used for DIY woodworking. You could age wood with baking soda stain or other homemade stains but this vinegar and steel wool solution works well. You can now age new wood faster & make it look old, aged, and rustic with-in minutes. You can weather wood, pickle wood or age wood with this easy homemade wood stain. This simple weathering technique can also work better than the old watered down paint wash or stain. You can now get that desired look for all your older looking wood projects. It's sort of a hack for aging and color toning your wood projects. This homemade wood stain is perfect for pallet wood, furniture, hardwood floor, or wooden props. Some scenic painters use this classic aging technique trick to make things like fruit crates, pallets, and barn wood. Others use it for industrial wooden things look old, used, sun dried, faded, vintage, reclaimed, and antique looking props. This mixture is great for weathering techniques, antique furniture restoration, distressing wood, similar to tea dying, antique finishing, ebonizing wood, coffee staining, and faux painting. The homemade staining or ebonizing mixture is really easy to create. We use a 2 Gallon bucket to mix our solution, 1/2 Gallon vinegar, and 2 steel wool. It may help to wash any oil off the steel wool, break or pull apart and cut up the steel wool into small pieces before mixing in the vinegar. Let it sit up to four days if you have time. Some have even heated up the solution to speed up the process. The longer it soaks the better the reaction and then mix a 1/2 Gallon of water into the mixture and your ready to start aging. Mix less water if you want a more powerful solution. If your DIY project has scratches and character it should darken up more just like stain or other patina. It will enhance the look of the natural wood as well as bring out other characteristics. You can always distress and make the piece look more distressed with a grinder. Use a clean paint brush to apply the steel wool wash.
