On May 24, 1941, the German battleship Bismarck sank HMS Hood, killing 1,415 men. Churchill ordered her destruction. After days of pursuit, the Bismarck neared French safety on May 26. Only aircraft from HMS Ark Royal could intercept. Fifteen obsolete Fairey Swordfish biplanes—slow, fragile, open-cockpit—launched through violent Atlantic storms. Flying at ninety knots through devastating anti-aircraft fire, they attacked at wave-top height. One torpedo struck the Bismarck's stern, jamming her rudders. Unable to steer, she circled helplessly. British battleships caught and sank her the next morning. The outdated Swordfish accomplished what the entire fleet could not.
