In October of 2025, the Baraga County Historical Society broke ground for a $1-2 million dollar addition to their museum. Jay Wakefield, who funded the addition, promised that it would tell the "whole story" of ancient copper mining in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Wakefield and other members of the Ancient Artifact Preservation Society (AAPS) claim that Old World societies (Phoenicians, Minoans, etc.) were heavily involved in the ancient copper mines of Michigan. For evidence, they rely on fraudulent artifacts such as the Michigan Relics and items from Burrows Cave. The museum plans to display some of these artifacts as well as a life-size model of an 8'-tall copper mining giant.
Donovan Murphy did his thesis work on understanding these claims and the AAPS. His thesis can be found here: https://digitalcommons.mtu.edu/etdr/1...
