This is the second installment of Mastering Ampacity: Motor Circuits, Conductors & OCPDs.
As a reminder, we are working within NEC Article 430, concentrating on the selection of conductors, overcurrent protection, ground-fault protection, and motor overload protection. The goal is to ensure the safe and reliable operation of both the conductors and all components within the motor circuit.
In today’s session, we will focus specifically on Section 430.22 – Single Motor Conductor Selection. Here, we select the conductor for a single motor in a continuous-duty application, the ampacity of this conductor but be at least 125% of the motor’s full-load current rating.
Additionally, we will explore the fundamentals to understand the requirements and industry practice. This session will reinforce the fundamental principles that guide the design of motor circuits and help ensure that solutions applied in the field are both safe and code-compliant.
