In this video I demonstrate how to tie one of the myriad of variations to this versatile and useful Nymph Pattern that doubles as a Lure too. The Damsel Fly is a large aquatic member of the Dragonflies family and this is the larval or nymph stage that is being represented. The adult is an iridescent blue and black dragonfly of medium size.
The damsel nymph is primarily fished using an intermediate or sinking line and retrieved fairly quickly to imitate the natural insect, which is a strong swimmer. It can also be fished using a floating line, again retrieved quickly which will result in the fly running shallow, but if this is the desired presentation then so be it.
In this pattern I have incorporated a few trigger materials, one being the hot orange bead for both weight and as a hot spot and the blue krinkle-flash in the tail. Tied in the style of a Woolly Bugger Lure it also has plenty of movement and will create a disturbance as it goes through the water.
