Bananas used to be full of hard, black seeds—and they tasted so different, you wouldn’t recognize them today. Wild bananas were full of large, hard seeds and had much less fruit around them. They were also less sweet and sometimes even bitter. People didn’t eat them for fun—they were more like survival food.

Everything changed when farmers started crossbreeding different types of bananas. They created a fruit that had tiny, soft seeds, a lot more flesh, and a much sweeter taste. That’s how we got the Cavendish banana, the kind most people eat today.

But because these bananas are clones of each other, they’re super vulnerable to disease. In fact, the original popular banana, called the Gros Michel, was almost wiped out by a fungus in the 1950s.
