Multi-purpose vehicles were an alternative long before the term “SUV” became mainstream. The Ford Escort Seeka is one of the most intriguing examples of this early concept. Although it carries the Escort name, Seeka was never a production model. Instead, it was a concept car developed by Ford in collaboration with the renowned Italian design house Ghia, created to explore a new vision of a family vehicle designed for life beyond the city.

The Seeka was based on the Ford Escort Wagon (Mk5), a popular family car in Europe at the time. However, Ford wanted something more than an ordinary family wagon. Additional features were introduced to give the car a more adventurous character, positioning it as a vehicle capable of taking its occupants on real leisure trips—ranging from road trips and picnics to light camping. As a result, Seeka was designed not merely as a practical family car, but as a lifestyle vehicle.

While retaining the core structure of the Escort Wagon, the Seeka received a complete personality makeover. Ride height was increased, off-road-style tires were fitted, and rugged-looking bumpers were added, along with spotlights and a roof rack for travel equipment. The overall impression was a hybrid between a wagon and an off-road vehicle—something quite novel at a time when such designs were still uncommon.

The rear cargo area was designed to be removable and convertible into a picnic table, while a retractable roof panel could be extended to function as an outdoor awning. The car also featured experimental technologies of the era, such as an in-vehicle communication system, which may seem ordinary today but represented a futuristic vision in the early 1990s. Power came from a 1.8-liter turbo diesel engine producing around 90 horsepower. However, performance was not the focus—the true significance of the Seeka lay in its concept and everyday usability.

The Ford Escort Seeka ultimately became a clear reflection of the direction the automotive industry would take in the years to come.
