HISTORICAL CONTEXT

The Cathars flourished in Languedoc (southern France) and northern Italy from the 12th century until their suppression in the 14th. The Albigensian Crusade (1209-1229) and the subsequent Inquisition systematically dismantled the movement. The last known Cathar leader was executed in 1321. Because the Church destroyed most Cathar texts, historians rely heavily on Inquisition records — accounts written by their persecutors.
