In this video we’ll write the structural formula for 2-Pentene (also called Pent-2-ene). 2-Pentene is a hydrocarbon consisting of Carbon (C) and Hydrogen (H) atoms. The molecular formula is C5H10.
Since the name ends in -ene we know that we have an Alkene. Because we have the prefix “pent” their will be five Carbon atoms in the longest chain.
We start by numbering the Carbon atoms in the 2-Pentenemolecule.
The 2 in front of 2-Pentene means that there will be a double bond on the second Carbon atom in the 2-Hexene molecule, and it will be between Carbon 2 and 3.
Note that there will be geometric isomers for 2-Pentene (cis-2-Pentene and trans-2-Pentene).
We can also write the structure using straight lines without the element symbols, which is a sort of molecular structure shorthand This is the skeletal formula for 2-Pentene. Finally, we could represent the structure with molecular models to provide further information about the molecular geometry.
